23 Things Troubles-Weeks 5 & 10

Well, now that the 23 Things is almost over, I am getting caught up with one or two that have given me a little bit of trouble.

I found that when I was working on the downloadables assignment for week 5, I had a little bit of difficulty using Overdrive. I needed to download the most reent edition of Overdrive, but was unable to due to the fact that I was on a library staff computer that does not all me to install software.

I ran into a similar issue when working on the Firefox add-ons in week 10's assignments. I was unable to download any of those add-ons for the exact same reason: I was on a library's computer that did not allow me to download.

I find that this type of issue is what stumps me and limits my being able to help customers. I can only get so far in the process before the library's computer limitations stop me dead in my tracks. Now, I know that I could call the eiNetwork and either a) request that they install it for me OR b) ask for admin privilages on the machine and then install it myself, but neither of these options is very practical when you are right in the middle of trying to show a customer how to do something. I guess I just wish that all of the newest versions of the software needed were automatically added to all of the library's computers when they come out, rather than having to do it by request.

Wishful thinking, I'm sure...

New/Old Job

Well, this week I went back to being a librarian again. Or at least a librarian who actually deals with books and people, as opposed to computers and people. And so far I have found it to be extremely enjoyable. I had forgotten how fun being a real librarian actually was. I do not have regrets about my 9 year foray into the world of computer instruction because it taught me a lot about myself and improved my skills greatly. But I do remember from times past that I always took the greatest pleasure in my job as a reference librarian when I matched someone up with the right book. There is just such a measure of satisfaction in that. So here's to being a librarian again! Yeah!

23 Things N @

Well, I guess it's time to restart this blog. Haven't used it for quite awhile.
I am excited and encouraged by the response to the 23 Things N @ by the librrians in Allegheny County. It will be interesting to see what everyone has to say. I hope we all end up having fun!
